    Ten interesting Facts - Chapter 2

    1. Aristotle believed that physics revolved around the concepts of the four elements: earth, air, fire, water. Different rules would be applied to objects of different elemental composition.

    2. Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer, theorized that the Earth revolved around the Sun. This contradicted the Church for many years but his idea was eventually accepted, well after his death.

    3. Galileo Galilei, a scientist of the early seventeenth century, demolished Aristotle's falling-body hypothesis. Except for the small effect of air resistance, he found that objects of various heights, which released at the same time, fell together and hit the ground at the same time.

    4. Galeleo stated that if there is no interference with a moving object, it will keep moving in a line forever.

    5. Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in motion.

    6. Newton's first law is called the law of inertia. It states that every object continues in its state of rest of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it.

    7. Net force is the combination of all forces that act on an object.

    8. When the net force on something is zero, we say that something is in mechanical equilibrium.

    9. A force due to gravity is the weight of an object.

    Chapters two and three.
    Chapter one
    1. Aristole divided motion into two main classes, natural motion and violent motion.
    2. Wind imposes motion on boats.
    3. In the renaissance time they thought that earth didnt move.
    4. Copernicus had a theory that the earth does move.
    5. A object that is twice as heavier does not hit the ground faster then the one with a normal weight, they hit at the same time.
    6. When its less friction the more the object contains the same speed.
    7. An object contains to do whatever its doing unless a force is brought out onto it.
    8. Tension decreases as you get closer and closer.
    9. Mechanical equilibrium is when something is in zero.
    10. When stepping on a scale two forces act upon it, one is you pushing downward on the scale and the other is upward support the force of the floor.

    -Aristotle (Greek philosopher, in the order of Socrates and Plato) was the tutor of Alexander The Great when he was young.

    -He believed, all "natural" objects were constantly trying to get back where they belonged and the heavier and object was the faster it should fall.

    -Natural (falling or rising with wind) and Violent Motions (pushing or pulling forces)

    -Nicolaus Copernicus, formulated the idea of a "moving Earth", which questioned Aristotle and the church itself

    -The first copy of his famous work "De Revolutionibus" reached him the day he died. (May 24, 1543)

    -Galileo worked to discredit Aristotle and help prove Copernicus's idea (moving Earth).

    -Galileo was born the year of Shakespeare's birth and Michelangelo's death

    -He was the first to build a telescope and look closer at the night sky, first to see Jupiter's moons.

    -He called his theory of the absence of force and an object continuing, Interia

    - A Force is simply a push or pull.

    -Free Fall Motion is any motion under only the influence of Gravity itself.

    1. Copernicus reasoned that the simplest way to account for the observed motions of the sun, moon, and plants through the sky was to assume that earth circle around the sun. 2. When the net force on something is zero, we say that something is in mechanical equilibrium. 3. When you weight yourself on a bathroom scale at rest, the support and the force of gravity pulling you down have the same magnitude. 4. we can test whether or not something is is in equilibrium by noting whether or not it undergoes changes in its state of motion. 5. if Copernicus were right about the earth moving, it would have moved at the speed of 107,000 kilometers per hour to circle the sun. 6. the earth is moving at 30 kilometers per second. 7.     5.)When you push on a create is as great as the force of friction between the crate and the floor, and it slides at an unchanging speed due to the net force on the crate being 0.

    1. galileo and the leaning tower: galileo,a scientist, gave credence to the copernican view of a moving earth. he made an experiment where he went to the top of the leaning tower of pisa and dropped objects of various weights. though one was heavier than the other, they both hit the ground at the same time and fell together at the same speed.
    2. galileo inclined planes: galileo denied to aristotle's statement when he stated that there is no need of a push or pull to keep an object moving. he tested this hypothesis by experimenting with the motion of various objects on plane surfaces tilted at various angles. he discovered that if the slope went downward the speed of the object would increase, if the slope went upward the speed of the object would decrease, and if there were no slope the speed would not change.
    3. a book lying on a flat counter is in equilibrium. since it is in equilibrium there must be another force acting on the book to produce a net force of zero-an upward force opposite to the force of gravity. the table pushes up on the book with as much force as the downward force of gravity on the book.
    4. we travel at 30 kilometers per second on earth because of its rotation. it is the speed of earth relative to the sun.
